This complex brief challenged us to create two independent residential units within the attic of a Liberty villa recently converted to a B&B.

The two units are very different: the lower one is a mini 2bed apartment convertible into a 4bed; the top one will host the B&B owners and their two young daughters.

In order to optimize the floor area and create a dynamic internal space, we introduced various interlocking mezzanines at different heights.

The entrance and living area of the smaller unit is located mid floor, its mezzanine hosts the bedroom and a skylight-cut above the internal staircase allows for natural light in the whole flat.

The main unit is spread on three different levels: entrance,  living areas, small toilet and a new light well in the lower level; the main bathroom on an intermediate level; and the two open bedrooms on the top level.

Both units enjoy natural light and a dynamic internal flow.

All the “rooms” are only partially partitioned from the rest of the flat to expose the spatial complexity whilst allowing for adequate privacy.

The light well in the main unit pierces through two mezzanines diffusing natural light from the core and becoming a small internal court.

The project has resulted in a cutting-edge solution with a high grade of spatial complexity and interlocking functions.
